My focus for the last project will be a self-portrait. I wanted to really explore my heritage and communicate that I am a mix of different ethnicities.
I chose to incorporate traditional wear, and below you'll find references that I've used. I do want to push parts of each so they become easily recognizable. So far I have included a Native-American headdress, an African blouse, and a Colombian skirt.
I'm still trying to build on a background that may just consist of colors or pattern. I was also beginning to brainstorm about mixing medium such as applying paint to the print. Typically, paint is easily associated to art which is another element of how I see myself as an artist. I may potentially play off of the "mixing" idea by having colors beginning to swirl and combine.
For right now, I chose to place my "self" on top of this crescent moon, mainly because I had designed a tattoo for myself with a specific design communicating the combination of things I adore. I wanted something that showed my appreciation for music, the moon, and the ocean.

Sketch of Final Project Idea |
I really enjoy the simplicity of the tattoo design. This being more personal project about you it might be cool to find a way so that everyone can connect with it. You could do this by blending idea of American culture with your heritage.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea and how personal it is to you! Just keep in mind simplicity, because there are so many things that make you, you be careful of the composition being too busy or fragmented.
ReplyDeleteI love how personal this idea is! Using your own unique cultural background is so cool. There are a lot of symbolic elements to this piece which I think are all important, but I would be careful you don't get too busy. I think you can keep it simple while still incorporating all the elements you want to. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
ReplyDeleteI really like this a lot!
ReplyDeleteI think basically what everyone else said, just make sure it doesn't get too busy. I don't think it is right now based off of your sketch. I think it is important that you include these symbols in the piece (like the treble clef), and I think you are doing so in a subtle enough way where it is not too busy.
I think a nice background would be incorporating that idea of the mixing and swirling of colors into a night sky. Just an idea.
This is so cool! I love the concept, heritage is something that I love seeing art about! I do agree with Caroline, just something to be aware of!
ReplyDeleteI really like your sketch and tattoo design, I agree with everyone above and I think a simple night sky with a few clouds and stars would be really nice as a background. I kind of want to see this colored similar too one of kendal's comics or something like that, but I really like the meaning you're exploring
ReplyDeleteI love how you chose different ethnicities. This is a unique way to express them and I think the idea with the moon is very creative. I'm curious as to how your going to color it and mix them together so I can't wait to see progress.
ReplyDeleteI like how much though you put into the design and judging by the sketch I think it will be a great piece.
ReplyDeleteI would be careful of Illustrator linework. It will make the piece very crisp, but you will loose a lot of that traditional "hand made" feeling that a lot of the elements represent. You can try leaving the pencilwork in (akin to what Ken is doing with his piece) or try to find a illustrator line brush that won't be that crisp and mass produced.
I really like the paint idea swirls idea. It seems that the liquefy action in photoshop would do the trick.
I like the idea. Definitely do your research because culture appropriate things are really important and I think it would make your piece that much stronger if you made sure all of the elements were culture appropriate. I'm also worried about the piece being busy with the incorporation of the tattoo idea. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteThis will be cool! Like the DreamWorks moon with the kid fishing. I love the idea of working with different ethnicities. What a good, personal way to go.
